The land where The Commons now stands was purchased by Deaconess in 2006 for a senior community called The Groves. It was the site of an old schoolhouse—and a stand of apple trees that was transplanted after the area was developed. Before the construction was complete Masonic Health System took over and completed 168 units.
In 2013 Benchmark took over management of the property. Changing the name to The Commons, Benchmark added another 90 apartments and a premier Independent Living community, upgrading The Commons to a full CCRC—and fulfilling its true potential. Today, The Commons offers Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing. Within one year of opening the full campus, The Commons was 100% occupied across all communities.
In December of 2021 New England Life Plan Communities, a not-for-profit organization financed by Hamlin Capital Management became the new owner of The Commons. Benchmark Senior Living signed a long-term contract and will continue operating the community.
