Our journey to a not-for-profit CCRC.

The journey from The Groves to The Commons and where we are today.

The land where The Commons now stands was purchased by Deaconess in 2006 for a senior community called The Groves. It was the site of an old schoolhouse—and a stand of apple trees that was transplanted after the area was developed. Before the construction was finished Masonic Health System took over and completed 168 units.

In 2013 Benchmark assumed management responsibilities of the property. Changing the name to The Commons in Lincoln, Benchmark developed and opened a full continuum of care on the campus which included fully licensed Assisted Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. Addition of the health center upgraded The Commons to a full CCRC—and fulfilled its true potential. In just over a year of opening the full campus, The Commons was 100% occupied across all neighborhoods.

Investing in the Future

In December of 2021, New England Life Plan Communities (NELPC), a not-for-profit became the new owner of The Commons in Lincoln. NELPC is a leader and innovator of services for older adults promoting transparency, inclusivity, and community integration within a culture of social awareness, workforce equity and environmental stewardship.

The NELPC board of directors governs The Commons in Lincoln and includes individuals who have played integral roles in ensuring the success and longevity of other not-for-profit communities. While Benchmark Senior Living will continue to manage the community under a long-term management contract, the board will oversee the community to ensure the management company meets the not-for-profit mission and performance goals.
