The Commons in Lincoln: Prioritizing Resident Health & Fitness
Got an eye on senior living health & fitness? Read on to find out how The Commons in Lincoln is challenging the status quo with its lavish fitness facility, summer games sessions and outside adventures, just to name a few.
We are turning the spotlight inward for a look at the top ways we keep our residents active and physically fit through programs led by our on-campus fitness specialist, Jason Williams.
Challenge the Status Quo
A little friendly competition never hurt, right? Genuinely motivating residents to reach their goals through natural competition is a fun and engaging way to promote physical fitness at The Commons. Our casual cornhole competitions, croquet, badminton and pickleball tournaments are just a few of the ways we engage our resident population and keep them moving.
Make It Fun
Leave it to our residents to run their own bocce league and battle it out—not so casually—for the annual rights to the league trophy. At the end of every summer season, our community bocce champions have their names engraved on the trophy, which is displayed in our fully appointed gym.
Offer the Right Equipment & Help Using It
The Commons boasts a full fitness facility where residents can take classes and enjoy personalized training. The area includes a gym, swimming pool and ten pieces of cardio equipment. Specifically, residents can choose from four large strength pieces—leg press, functional trainer, row/pull down, chest press—and a side studio with smaller equipment like dumbbells, resistance bands, medicine balls, balance equipment and a balance bar.
Residents find the area spacious, inviting and well staffed with experts. A certified physical therapist is stationed full-time in the gym alongside Jason Williams. These core team members coordinate to identify the needs of residents and provide them with personalized fitness plans to maintain or improve their physical fitness.
Take It Outside
In the summer, residents of The Commons enjoy the “Summer Outdoor Games” every Friday with a fun-filled tournament the last Friday of the month. The campus also abuts trails, with Walden Pond in walking distance. Additionally, residents enjoy seasonal outdoor walks in the spring and fall at local scenic spots such as the Concord Wildlife Refuge and the Minuteman Trail.
Another outdoor attraction for residents is an annual 5K on and around The Commons campus each October. Jason Williams and resident Judi Foster work together to organize the route and coordinate the day’s activities. With a typical crew of more than 40 residents, participants can elect to walk one mile, the full 3.1 miles or anything in between. After, the community hosts a celebration brunch to mark the event.
At The Commons in Lincoln, our experienced associates understand physical fitness is important for maintaining strength, mobility and independence. That is why we are committed to helping residents work out safely, regularly and with a healthy dose of fun.
