James Popkin, MD

Primary Care Physician

Role and Responsibilities​

Dr. James Popkin serves as the on-site Primary Care Physician (PCP) for most of our Independent Living, Assisted Living and Mind & Memory Care residents.

As a Primary Care Physician, Dr. Popkin is dedicated to supporting overall health and well-being while building trusted relationships and delivering care that is both comprehensive and deeply personal.

Industry Expertise

Dr. Popkin has held numerous respected leadership roles throughout his career, including Chief of Oncology at Norwood Hospital and Southwood Hospital, as well as Medical Director for several clinical and hospice programs.

For nearly three decades, he served as Chair of the Human Investigations Committee (IRB), helping to guide safe, ethical and high-quality care across the Neponset Valley Health System.

From 1982 through 2017, Dr. Popkin contributed to oncology research as an investigator with national research groups including ECOG, NSABP, CALGB and the Southwest Oncology Group. His work supported studies and publications that advanced cancer treatment nationwide.

Today, he brings the insight gained from more than three decades of research into his primary care practice, offering a steady and informed presence for residents.

With more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Popkin brings deep expertise and compassion to caring for older adults. His approach reflects a commitment to relationship-centered care that evolves with each resident’s needs.

Patients consistently describe Dr. Popkin as kind, attentive and easy to talk with. He takes time to listen carefully, understand individual goals and guide each person with clarity and compassion.

Milestones

Dr. Popkin earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Boston University. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and medical oncology at the Boston VA Medical Center.

He is affiliated with the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology.
