The beginning of Laura Green’s career was a long way from what she does now! She worked in the Department of Revenue, reviewing procedures and doing audit testing, but that ended when she left the workforce to be a full-time mother to her two children. During that time, her mother was diagnosed with vascular dementia and needed to live in a safe and caring environment. “My sister and I placed her at one of the Benchmark communities,” she recalls. “The staff was so kind and caring to my mother. When I started looking for a new career, I focused my attention on Assisted Living communities.” She joined Benchmark and was trained in programming for seniors in 2012. She worked in the Memory Care neighborhood as an activity assistant and was later promoted to Program Coordinator. In 2016 a friend suggested she apply for the Program Director position at the Skilled Nursing facility at The Commons. She was offered a job in the then-new community and has worked here ever since.
Laura says her favorite part of the job is connecting on a personal level with every resident. “The social assessment is the key that unlocks the door to social connection,” she says. “It is so satisfying when a resident is ready to discharge, and they want my cell number so they can still keep in touch with me. I guess that I made the human connection.”
